Asterix

It is my mission, should I choose to accept it, (and I do) to attempt daringly to track down the entire collection of Asterix books. Chances are, if my previous dismal attempts to win anything on Ebay are anything to go by, that it will be a long and arduous process but heck, I think I'll give it a try.

Of course the first thing I need is a list of the darn books in order of releaseliness. *Searches* I did briefly consider doing the same for Tintin books but I'm not really sure I fancy trying to find both such series at the same time, and as enjoyable as Tintin may have been, Asterix definately had the edge as far as I'm concerned. So poo.

You're on your own for those ones, kitty... I never really took to Asterix
Ahhh, they're not for everyone I guess. :)
Annoyingly, I had complete runs of both series, but they're all now victims of the many moves. :-P Are they actually out of print? A good bookstore or comics emporium may well be able to help, of course. (As might the net.. I have all of Tintin again as a result :)

You could even use them as an excuse to brush up on your French - I can't imagine it'd be legal for Asterix to go OOP in France. ^_^ (And it's sometimes interesting to notice the translator tweaks, too - The Blue Lotus was a long time coming to English, and I wound up picking up a copy in France one time. As I recall, the original was clear that everyone was talking about opium, whereas the English version only talked of "drugs")
I have no idea, though if the shops in Birmingham (Borders, and 2 Waterstones) don't have them, nobody will. I did find a CD on ebay that had all the books scanned onto it, but I'm not a huge fan of reading things like that off a monitor so ideally I want to find the deadtree versions.

As for French, its not so much a case of brushing up on it, it would be a case of learning it full stop. ;) But yep, I can imagine there must be quite a few things that get lost or totally scambled in translation. :o
Ooh, I love Asterix - though like [info]porsupah, most of my books have disappeared over the years. *grumbles* At any rate, you can narrow things down a bit if you (to start with at least) ignore the very recent books. You see, originally Goscinny did the words and Uderzo the art, but after Goscinny died, Uderzo started writing - and suffice it to say he's not as good at it as he is at drawing. =:P
Ahh yes, actually I'd totally forgotten about that. But yep, I remember seeing reviews of the first of those "new" books and they said although the stories were still reasonable, they didn't have the same "sheen" as the earlier books. The one I'll really have to aim for is "Asterix In Britain" as that was always my favourite and the only one I ever actually owned. (The rest were always borrowed from the library)
